CMA Innovation Day 2025: A Day of Ideas, Energy and Industry Leadership

In a world where health needs are evolving rapidly, innovation is no longer optional—it’s essential. That was the guiding principle behind this year’s CMA Innovation Day, held on 14 May 2025 at the Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park. With the theme Innovation in a Rapidly Changing World, the event brought together a full room of members, experts, and industry leaders to explore where complementary medicines are heading—and how the sector can continue to adapt and grow.

The day opened with a regulatory update from Avinash Clarke, Assistant Secretary at the TGA. Avi acknowledged the strong collaboration between the TGA and CMA, highlighting the importance of ongoing engagement to help make the regulatory system clearer and easier for sponsors to navigate, and setting the tone for a day focused on progress.

The program that followed reflected the breadth and depth of the industry itself. Dr Leah Hechtman explored the role of mitochondrial health in women’s wellbeing, while Belinda Hay (from Beyond Export) addressed the realities of global trade and offered practical strategies for businesses navigating export uncertainty. Jacob Bauly (from dsm-firmenich) spoke on the evolution of consumer health priorities, and Patrick Antolak (from TSI Group) examined how younger generations are reshaping how and where they engage with health and wellness products.

The afternoon’s sessions explored innovations in ingredient development, gut health, delivery systems, sustainability, and regulatory priorities. From Dr Daniel James on personalised nutrition to Professor Cinzia Randazzo on probiotic-based approaches to women’s health, the breadth and quality of content highlighted the diversity and ambition within the sector. We also head about new ingredients, including Non-Animal Fermented Chondroitin Sulfate, Ebel. One®, MyCondro™, and Rhuleave-K.

The final session from Swisse Wellness’ Dr Julia Park and Joao Paulino offered a fascinating look into product innovation in the mental wellbeing space—including a current research project using wearable devices to track sleep outcomes, reflecting not just innovation in product, but also in clinical methodology.

Attendees also explored the exhibition space throughout the day, showcasing innovations in raw materials, packaging, contract manufacturing and regulatory services.

Thank you to all speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and delegates who made the day such a success. CMA is proud to host this flagship event and we look forward to continuing the momentum through the year ahead.
