Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA) has today submitted its 2025-26 Pre-Budget Submission to the Australian Government, advocating for policies that will strengthen the role of complementary medicines in preventive health, support industry growth, and enhance consumer access to high-quality products.
With over 75% of Australian households using complementary medicines and an industry contributing $6.2 billion annually to the economy, the sector plays a vital role in public health and economic development. However, targeted policy support is needed to unlock its full potential.
Key recommendations
CMA’s submission includes nine key recommendations that focus on:
- Incorporating complementary medicines into preventive health policy to improve public health and reduce healthcare costs.
- Restoring private health insurance rebates for natural therapies, supporting Australians who use these modalities to maintain their wellbeing.
- Supporting Australian manufacturing, exports, and research through industry-friendly policies, investment, and regulatory efficiency.
- Ensuring a fair and balanced regulatory environment, removing unnecessary burdens while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
We believe these measures will help build a stronger, more competitive industry that benefits both Australian consumers and businesses.
Why this matters
With chronic disease rates rising and Australia’s healthcare system under increasing pressure, proactive health measures must be prioritised. Complementary medicines contribute to preventive health, improved wellbeing, and reduced strain on government healthcare spending.
The industry is also an economic success story, employing nearly 16,000 Australians and positioning the country as a global leader in high-quality complementary medicine manufacturing. By removing barriers to growth and strengthening research investment, the sector can continue to thrive both locally and internationally.
